my experience with elephants, giraffes and rhinos has been limited to zoo visits and Facebook posts i might read as i scroll through the newsfeed. through my work on the #majestic series, my knowledge about each species grows.

by the time you finish reading this short blog, you will have read more than 6 facts about rhinos. i can't promise you will remember 6 of the facts. but if you do, this will certainly impress your friends!

rhino facts that will impress your friends:

  1. rhinos can grow to over 6 feet tall and more than 11 feet in length.

  2. some rhinos use their teeth, not their horns, for defence.

  3. a group of rhinos is called a 'herd' or a 'crash'.

  4. rhinos have poor eyesight, but very well-developed senses of smell and hearing. the smell sense is the largest area of the rhino's brain.

  5. rhinos have been around for over 50 million years.

  6. the Sumatran rhino is the closest living relative of the ancient extinct woolly rhino. these rhinos had thick, shaggy coats and were hunted by early humans, and are depicted in cave paintings dating back more than 30,000 years ago.

  7. rhinos are plant eaters

  8. despite their name, white rhinos are actually gray.
